REINVENTING THE REEL

REINVENTING THE REEL

DETAILS

Eventbrite - Strive, Roma

“Reinventing the Reel” is a documentary short about contemporary independent filmmakers’ attempts to change the portrayal of LGBT characters in film. The film begins with a historical perspective of the big-studio Hollywood treatment of LGBT characters, and then shows how that portrayal has changed, and why is important that it continues to change.

This brief history is followed by an inside look into how specific independent filmmakers are attempting to breaking the chain of that negative history on a small scale. The documentary follows the journey of Casper Andreas, an American independent film-maker, as he directs and produces “Kiss Me, Kill Me” a murder-mystery feature film about a group of characters in West Hollywood who happen to identify as LGBT. In the film’s story, their gayness comes secondary to the fact that they are authentically flawed human beings dealing with challenging life experiences separate from their sexuality. With the help of game-changing tools like crowd funding, film-makers like Casper Andreas can bypass the big studios and finance their films by accessing an already-existing audience.

According to the Contact Hypothesis Theory, the more times a viewer sees/interacts with a minority in film (preferably in varied depictions), the less prejudice they will have towards that group. The hope has always been that big Hollywood films would begin to include LGBT characters that had more reasons for being in the narrative than just their sexuality. The underlying message of “Reinventing the Reel” is that it may no longer be necessary to wait for that: like-minded individuals are now able to take the creative power into their own hands and bring their ideas to life with the support of a waiting and eager audience.

The bar had an unusual ambience. Its scent it somehow beckoned me inside, and when the owner, standing behind the counter, saw me, he said: “We only serve one thing, straight.” I glanced at the menu, and all I saw was umeshu (“plum wine”) and the name of the locale. Ah, they only serve plum
wine from around the country, I thought. But no, the drink was too beautiful to be just only that… And
it took me back, back to my origins. “Here’s your umishu (“ocean wine”)”, said the bartender.

Umishu!? I put the glass to my mouth, had a taste. Nope, not umeshu, but definitely umishu. What a discovery! A heartwarming fantasy story of wines rich in imagery that will take viewers on a journey to their roots.

Based on a true story, Robert Areizaga Jr., (Kristos Andrews, Emmy® Award-winner THE BAY), is a good kid caught up on the wrong side of the tracks. Determined to make a better life for himself, Robert struggles through a series of trials and tribulations that take him dangerously close to the edge. Always struggling to get ahead, Robert isn’t ready to give up the party life with his ‘goons’ just yet. Lured by the prospect of quick cash, Robert takes a foolish chance with the law, a decision that costs him nearly everything. Unwilling to lead a dead end life on the streets, Robert decides to take the Yonkers police exam. When his life takes a positive turn, Robert attends a house party unaware that members of a brutal gang would also be there. When the night quickly turns into a nightmare, the lives of everyone are changed forever.

DETAILS

Eventbrite - Physical Attraction, From The Tub, Since I Laid Eyes, The Hook, Sra. Zorilla

If you are an undocumented queer immigrant living in the United States amidst this turbulent political climate, you are not safe and your future is at risk. When Moises Serrano was just a baby, his parents risked everything to flee Mexico and make the perilous journey across the desert in search of the American dream. After 23 years growing up in the rural south where he is forbidden to live and love, Moises sees only one option — to fight for justice. Forbidden is a feature length documentary about an inspiring young man whose story is exceptional, although not unique. Moises is like the thousands of young people growing up in the United States with steadfast dreams but facing overwhelming obstacles. Our film chronicles Moises’ work as an activist traveling across his home state of North Carolina as a voice for his community, all while trying to forge a path for his own future.

Two teenagers in Puerto Rico and the discovery of love through fairy tales and skateboards. Confronted by their desires and repressions these two teens confront religious and social repressions condemning the chances of accepting their homosexuality.

This film presents the social differences affecting the country and at the same time as religion responds to social status. Romeo and Julio are the result of traditional and fundamentalist families where the only salvation is dressing up in a costume party to unleash their freedom.
